Tree of Life
With a supportive hand, all people can develop their abilities.
One of the founders and our first Chairman, the late Kaj Robert Sørensen loved the song "Living Tree" because he and also many of us thought the song told a little about the spirit of the Råd og dåd. It also gave the idea for our logo.

The story behind Råd og dåd

Carl Christensen started Råd og dåd in 1997.
How it all started
In the early eighties experimented someone on Limfjord School
Løgstør - a boarding school for mentally retarded (moronic)
- In "Group 3" to make the frames to create a coherent life for
retarded people. They reach far, but were also running into barriers in
terms of working hours, physical environment, bureaucracy, etc.. But you live to see that
both mentally retarded and staff flourish when
released from the institution life's narrow confines. When students
should continue, there were limited options and only central institutions and
guesthouses for thme. It was before living community model (§ 68) was a possibility.
At the same time some people in a small town Torslev (In Brovst) with an old empty
"Merchant House" was looking to find local employment opportunities.
Against this background led local involvement and the desire and willingness to
develop better opportunities for mentally handicapped in the founding of
"Social Education Collective, ´Købmandsgården´", a
private institution physically located in "The Old
Merchant House "in Torslev.
The goal was in addition to "creating the framework for a coherent life
and develope skills
(residential training etc..), So that the mentally retarded could get a more
independent living on their own terms.
Employees were hired - equal pay, flat structure, without contractual
scientific frontiers and working time rules - and ther was made detailed descriptions of
human nature and objectives. After a couple years were
"stiftelsen" expanded with another fraternity. The experience was, after
few local protests that the Købmandsgårdens new residents were well received in
local area, but rather "passive": "yes, they also should be allowed
to be here, "as it was expressed. And it also proved that the
retarded, away from the rigid institutionsliv could make
many more tasks than expected. This led to that the goal of 1987
was expanded and formulated on a more trial basis for the
further work. An experimental project P. H. I. L., which was supported
of SUM funds were put on rails.
It should be clarified, as it largely came to influence
Købmandsgården and the conceptual framework for subsequent projects
including Råd og dåd.
